The sun shone bright over Wells as over 15,000 food lovers descended on the city for the annual Wells Food Festival on Sunday (October 8).
While the festival was a roaring success on all fronts, it was a particularly special day for local producers Fenny Castle and Billies & Tong who took home top honours in their respective categories.
Fenny Castle, led by owners James and Gill Cumming, clinched The Truespeed Award for Alcoholic Drink. The judges were full of praise, with Jacky Brayton noting, "it was the knowledge, passion and enthusiasm from James and Gill that swung it for Fenny Castle. They truly do it all—from planting the vines to bottling."
Billies & Tong also celebrated their win for The Mr Filbert's Award for Snacks and Savouries. The judges were highly impressed with the presentation and the enthusiasm shown by owner Gerry Koen. James Taylor from Mr Filbert's summed it up by saying, "this was such a well-presented stand, and we felt them a worthy winner."
But the awards were only a part of what made this festival special. "There was a real buzz, with the stunning backdrop, sun shining, and fabulous food and drink from our artisan producers," said Jon Abbott, festival organiser and director. "We were particularly thrilled by how many 'sold out' signs were displayed on stalls by the end of the day – it is a real measure of the festival's success."
While the festival had its share of fun, with events ranging from children's cookery sessions to the inaugural Charlie Bigham's Plate Spinning Championship, the focus was firmly on the high-quality, locally-produced food and drink that defines this region. For those who didn't manage to make it this year, plans are already underway for the next Wells Food Festival. The organisers are inviting volunteers to join the team and help make the next edition even more memorable.
"It is run by volunteers and we are always overwhelmed by people's generosity with their time. If anyone would like to join the team for next year, please do get in touch," said Jon.
