After a first half to forget for Wells City, who were not at the races, they came out of the traps quickly in the second period and controlled the game to beat Portishead Town 4-0 and deservedly get the three points.

Wells had the first chance of the game on three minutes as a delicate lobbed ball by Tom Hill found Harry Foster but his first time effort on the half volley came back off the base of the post.

On seven minutes a Portishead corner was cleared by Wells despite penalty appeals for a possible foul.

After 13 minutes a poor clearance from Portishead allowed Craig Herrod to bring the ball down and his shot on the turn fired just wide.

Portishead should have scored on 38 minutes as a rapid break down the left hand side saw their Number 9 have two efforts at goal from only six yards but both attempts were thwarted by Harley Wilkinson who should really have been left with no chance.

On 40 minutes Wells broke down the right, Charlie Crook put in an inviting cross but Ross McErlain headed just wide.

Wells got their first goal on the stroke of half time as good intricate play between Crook and Herrod set Foster up to turn the last defender and shoot high into net. Half time Wells City 1-0 Portishead.

Wells were fortunate to lead 1-0 at the break as they had been second best for the majority of the half.

Wells doubled their lead on 57 minutes after good work from McErlain on the edge of the box, where he held off three defenders before timing his pass to perfection for man of the match Tom Hill to brilliantly finish from a tight angle.

The third goal came on 84 minutes when James Bayliss picked out a great cross which found McErlain who took a touch and cut inside his marker before firing low into the corner.

The icing on the cake was the final goal right at the death, when Mark Randall, with a trademark cross, found Crook and still with a lot to do, his diving header found the bottom corner. Final score Wells City 4-0 Portishead Town.

Wells travel to local rivals Cheddar on Saturday (February 15) for a 3pm kick off.
