Congratulations to singer/songwriter Hetta Falzon, from Wells, whose song Obsession has made it through to the top three songs shortlisted for the finals of the Song Academy's Young Songwriter of the Year, 13 to 18 year UK/Ireland category.

This year's competition attracted more than 700 entries from aspiring young songwriters across the world, with a wide variety of genres, from folk to jazz, soul, rock, punk, reggae and pop.

Hetta, who is currently in Year 11 at Wells Cathedral School, will now perform her song in a live Instagram event on Saturday June 20, attended by some of the competition judges, where they will announce the winner.

She has also been invited to perform in a live showcase event in November at The Tabernacle, Notting Hill, London, with the other top three finalists.

The judging panel includes successful British singer/songwriter, Tom Odell; Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Imelda May; record produced and TV presenter, Miranda Cooper; songwriter and producer, Eg White; lyricist, Emily Philips; British Ivor Novello Award two-time winner and Grammy nominated songwriter, producer and film scorer, Sacha Skarbek; musician, Dan Gillespie Sells; the song writing team, Sodajerker; and Northern Irish songwriter, Janet Devlin.

Hetta had three of her original songs shortlisted among the top 60 finalists in the competition, selected from hundreds of entries across the UK.

She is a member of the school's Vocal department and the Commercial, Rock and Pop department, and is one of only two finalists to have more than one song selected.

The Young Songwriter 2020 competition, in it's ninth year, is the leading international songwriting competition for eight to 18-year-olds and provides a golden opportunity for aspiring young songwriters to get their songs heard by some of the best songwriters and stand out in the music industry.
