Craig Herrod was the star as Wells City put in a huge second half performance to thrash Sherborne 5-1 at the weekend.
Herrod started the scoring on 11 minutes when Harvey Hadrill won an aerial battle on the half way line and then instinctively curled a brilliant ball over the Sherborne back line to Herrod, who timed his run to perfection and, with the keeper rushing out to thwart him, quite brilliantly lifted the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net from 20 yards.
On 18 minutes, after a quick Wells break, Sherborne only half cleared their lines and as the ball broke on the edge of the box Tom Hill let fly but his effort went inches wide of the bottom left post.
After 21 minutes, this time Harry Foster picked the ball up on the edge of the box but his curling effort just evaded the far right corner of the goal.
On the half-hour mark, some great build up play down the right between Hadrill and Herrod saw the ball pulled back to Hill, who then Cruyff-turned his man on the edge of the box before curling a left footed effort agonisingly wide.
Sherborne equalised on 32 minutes when a corner was not cleared properly and a clever reverse pass to the back post picked out an unmarked Josh Williams who calmly slotted the ball under Harley Wilkinson.
At half time the score was 1-1 in an entertaining half that Wells edged and will feel aggrieved not to be leading.
Herrod scored his second on 53 minutes when a dangerous ball into the Sherborne box was not defended properly and after the centre half tried to flick the ball away, he only laid it on a plate for Herrod, who exquisitely struck the ball into the bottom left corner to give Wells a deserved lead.
On the hour mark, Wells nearly got a third as a lung busting run from Hadrill saw him evade two challenges before delivering a cross into the path of Ross Padfield but his snapshot half volley flew just wide.
Wells got their third goal on 66 minutes when a Herrod free kick from the left was met at the far post by a towering header from Hadrill and his bullet header gave the keeper no chance.
Goal number four came on 81 minutes as Herrod got in behind the Sherborne back four again before unselfishly squaring the ball to Foster who stroked the ball into the bottom right corner.
On 90 minutes and the icing on the cake for Wells was the deadly duo doing it again with Herrod playing in Foster, whose initial shot being saved but he followed up and smashed the rebound in to give Wells an emphatic 5-1 victory in front of the home crowd.
This was a brilliant game for Wells who didn't let up in the second half and a game that Sherborne will want to forget about.
Herrod was instrumental in everything positive, scoring the first two and then assisting the final three goals and quite rightly was awarded man of the match.
Wells are away this weekend week as they travel to Portishead.
