A new interior perimeter wall walk around the Great Hall at the Bishop's Palace in Wells has been given planning permission.

An application by Jonathan Sawyer from the Palace Trust for the installation of new wall walk to the perimeter of Bishop Burnell's Great Hall ruinous remains, the addition of ancillary balustrades, the installation of new handrails to north east and north west tower stairs, the construction of a new path parallel to the south wall and adaptation/enhancement of existing garden planted beds, has been approved by Mendip District Council planners.

The new walk will be an added tourist attraction for the palace, and it received support from Wells City Council and the Gardens Trust.

However, there were objections from the Council for British Archaeology and the Mendip Conservation Advisory Panel, who both had worries about the harm to the setting of the ruin.

Mendip planners gave the proposals the green light, saying the character and appearance of the conservation area would be preserved.
