From live jazz to medieval tournaments: What's happening in and around Wells this weekend

Looking for something fun to do in Wells this weekend? There are plenty of exciting events lined up, offering a variety of entertainment for everyone. From live jazz and medieval tournaments to educational days and community open houses, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

On Friday, 14 June, jazz enthusiasts can delight in an evening with the Jonny Mansfield Quintet at Cedars Hall. The Kenny Wheeler prizewinning percussionist will be performing with some of the UK's outstanding young jazz talents. This live jazz event promises to be a musical treat for a summer evening. Jonny has performed at many prestigious venues and his debut album with his 11-piece ensemble, 'Elftet', has received critical acclaim. For more information, visit here.

The next day, Saturday, 15 June, Wells Cathedral School is hosting a 'Be a Mathematician for a Day' event. This is a great opportunity for Year 5 students to get a taste of life as a specialist mathematician. Participants will engage in a variety of activities similar to those they would experience as part of the Specialist Mathematics scheme at Wells. Registration is required at least a week in advance due to limited numbers. For more details and to register, click here.

On Sunday, 16 June, history and adventure enthusiasts can head to The Bishop's Palace for 'The Tournament of the Knights'. The Warwick Warriors will be showcasing their skills in archery, sword fighting, and the grand melee. Visitors can choose their favourite knight and cheer them on throughout the day. The event promises to be captivating and entertaining, regardless of the weather. Find out more here.

Also on Sunday, 16 June, The Reverend Canon Toby Wright will be installed as the new Dean of Wells. The ceremony will take place at Wells Cathedral, and there will be restricted access to the Cathedral during the service. Visitors should note that the last entry will be at 12:00 pm, and the Cathedral will be cleared from 12:30 pm. For more information about the event, visit here.

The City of Wells Almshouses will host an Open Day on Saturday, 15 June, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Visitors can explore the beautiful gardens, medieval buildings, the Guild Room, and the ancient Chapel. There will also be ploughman's lunches and homemade cakes and puddings available. Live music performances will include George Evans from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and Somerset Flutes from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Admission is free.

For art lovers, the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists is holding their 2024 International Exhibition of miniature paintings at Wells Town Hall from Saturday, 8 June to Saturday, 15 June (closed on Sunday, 9 June). Finally, on Sunday, 16 June, St Cuthbert's Parish Church will host the Wells Royal British Legion Summer Concert. The concert will feature the Glastonbury Male Voice Choir and local singer George Evans. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available during the interval. Tickets are £10 each and can be purchased from Eventbrite.
