David Warburton, former MP for Somerton and Frome, passed away unexpectedly at 59.

David Warburton, who served as MP for Somerton and Frome from 2015 until 2023, has died at the age of 59.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed Mr Warburton was found at a property in Sands End, Fulham, on Tuesday 26 August. His death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious. London Ambulance Service said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Born in Reading in 1965, Mr Warburton studied music at the Royal College of Music and King's College London before teaching and later running successful technology and property businesses. He entered politics through the Wells Conservative Association and was selected as Conservative candidate for Somerton and Frome in 2013.

He won the seat in 2015 with one of the largest constituency swings in the country, going on to increase his majority in both the 2017 and 2019 elections. During his time in Parliament he sat on the European Scrutiny Committee, chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Music, and served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Education.

In 2022, Mr Warburton was suspended from the Conservative Party while Parliament's Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme investigated claims of sexual misconduct and drug use. He admitted to taking cocaine but firmly denied the misconduct allegations. After more than a year under investigation, he resigned in June 2023, saying he had been left without a fair hearing.

Shortly after his resignation, the Independent Expert Panel reviewed the case and found the complaints should not have proceeded. The allegations were subsequently withdrawn.

His departure triggered a by-election in Somerton and Frome, which returned the seat to the Liberal Democrats with the election of Sarah Dyke.

Outside politics, Mr Warburton continued his business career and in 2024 became Group CEO of the Capenex group of companies.
