An event is being held in Wells next month to raise money for the city's Foodbank and Furniture Storehouse.

Organised by Wells Vineyard Church, the fundraiser is being held on Saturday October 5 from 7pm in the Elim Connect Centre, on the Portway, Wells.

There will be a buffet supper, live sounds from the 1960s and 70s, and an auction of promises. Bring your own bottle, but soft drinks will be provided.

The Wells Foodbank receives food left in stores such as Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco, which is donated by customers, the stores themselves and from many individuals.

The food is stored at Wells Vineyard Church and distributed to needy people on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Up to the end of August this year, 214 food parcels with 5,900 meals have been delivered compared to 2018's total of 211 food parcels with 6,100 meals, which means that at this point in the year the Foodbank is almost up to the whole of last year's figures.

Donated good household items go to the Furniture Storehouse, which then distributes them to people through agencies such as the Mendip YMCA, Citizens' Advice Bureau, Mendip District Council, the probation service, and so on.

The goods are delivered for free using the church's van, and running costs are high, which are paid for by church members and some donations.

Up to the end of August this year, the storehouse has delivered 166 household items to 37 needy people.
