Drivers around Wells face yet more delays as the road between Wells and Wedmore is closed for a week.

Wessex Water are relining sewers at Bleadney, between Wells and Wedmore, from Monday 24 October until Friday 28 October as part of a £200,000 renovation scheme to help maintain their condition for at least another 50 years.

A section of the B3139 Wells Road, near Wookey, will be closed to through traffic during the project, with access maintained for residents and emergency vehicles and diversions in place from both Wedmore and Wells.

The planned diversion will take drivers from Wells via the A371 to Cheddar, then on to the B3151 to Wedmore.

It's a diversion of around 26km (16 miles) which Travel Somerset estimates will take around 35 minutes. However, with the work taking place during half term, and Cheddar a hotspot for visitors, at peak times it could take even longer

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: "Most of the repairs will be carried out using 'no-dig' techniques, which allow us to replace the pipe more quickly, less intrusively and with less carbon emissions than via conventional methods, reducing disruption for nearby residents.''

"However, the road will need to be closed for a short period of time to ensure the work can be completed as quickly and safely as possible.

"We apologise for any delays to people's journeys caused by this closure and would urge them to take into account the extra time they might need using the diversions in place.

"We have written to residents and businesses in the area to inform them of the scheme and we expect the work to be finished by Friday, October 28.''
