Crime figures for February 2024 show an increase in reported incidents across Wells, with a total of 98 crimes recorded, up from 69 in January.

This month-on-month comparison highlights a worrying rise in several categories, including shoplifting and public order offences.

In February, shoplifting cases jumped to 15, up from 12 in the previous month.

Meanwhile, public order offences, which involve activities disrupting peace or safety, more than doubled from 6 in January to 11. Violent crimes continue to be the most frequent, with numbers slightly increasing from 26 to 30 incidents over the month.

Other notable figures include anti-social behaviour, which rose from 3 incidents in January to 9 in February, and burglary, which saw an increase from 1 to 8 cases. There were also 6 recorded incidents each of criminal damage and arson in February, holding steady from January's figures.

Vehicle crimes slightly decreased from 6 to 5 incidents, while drug-related crimes rose to 3 incidents from none reported in January.

A police spokesperson expressed concern over these developments: "We are concerned about the rise in crime rates in Wells, particularly the increases in shoplifting and public order offences. We are working closely with local businesses and the community to address these issues and enhance safety in the area."

The police are urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

Increased patrols are being planned to deter criminal activity and provide reassurance to the community.
