Crime in Wells fell significantly in December 2024, with 70 recorded offences compared to 98 in November. While this marks a notable reduction, violent crime remained the most common category, and shoplifting continues to be a concern for local businesses.

Violent crime, which includes offences such as assault, harassment, and domestic abuse, accounted for 27 incidents in December, a drop from 44 in November. Despite this decline, it remains the most frequently recorded offence in the city.

Shoplifting, which covers theft from retail premises, also saw a reduction, with 11 reports in December compared to 21 the previous month. While this is an improvement, shop owners have previously raised concerns about persistent theft and its impact on their businesses.

Public order offences, which include threatening behaviour, violent disturbances, and disorderly conduct, decreased from 13 incidents in November to seven in December. A reduction in such crimes can indicate improved public safety, particularly in areas where disturbances and anti-social behaviour have previously been reported.

Burglaries saw the biggest drop, with just one incident reported in December compared to seven in November. Burglary refers to unlawfully entering a property with intent to steal or commit another crime, and the sharp decline suggests a positive trend in home and business security.

Criminal damage and arson, which involve vandalism and deliberate fire-setting, rose slightly from three incidents in November to five in December. While these numbers remain relatively low, such offences can have a significant impact on property owners and local amenities.

Other theft, which covers offences such as stealing unattended items, pickpocketing, and theft from vehicles, increased from two incidents in November to six in December. Police regularly advise residents to remain vigilant and secure their belongings to reduce the risk of opportunistic crime.

Drugs offences, including possession and intent to supply, increased from one case in November to three in December. Meanwhile, robbery, which refers to theft involving force or the threat of violence, rose from one incident to three. These figures remain relatively low but are an important focus for local policing efforts.

A police spokesperson said: "We continue to work closely with the community to address crime and anti-social behaviour. While the reduction in overall crime figures is encouraging, we remain committed to tackling violent crime, theft, and other offences that affect residents and businesses. We urge people to report any suspicious activity so we can respond effectively."

With crime levels fluctuating month by month, police say they will continue to monitor trends and target resources accordingly. The latest crime figures for January 2025 are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
