It's just days away! This weekend sees the much-anticipated return of 'Christmas in Wells', the city's annual seasonal market.

On Saturday 17 December stalls will be lining Wells Market Place, and taking over Bishop's Palace Green too.

With over 100 traders in total, discover a range of local food and drink on offer. You'll find original gifts to treat your friends, family… or yourself!

Open from 9am – 3pm, let the city of Wells welcome you to the perfect Christmas day out. Enjoy mulled cider, and speciality street food, while you stroll along to the smell of roasting chestnuts and seasonal sounds. There will be live music, including festive favourites, Gus Dowling and a local pianist.

The 'Christmas in Wells' market experience is organised by Mendip District Council, in collaboration with Wells City Council, the Bishop's Palace and local community groups.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, Wells Town Crier, Len Sweales, local councillors and Mendip staff will cut a ceremonial ribbon beneath the Bishop's Eye at 11am.

The varied stalls mean there is something for everyone.

Gerry and Natalie Koen, owners of Billies & Tong, a Wells-based speciality food business, said: "We are so looking forward to the Wells Christmas Market. We have attended for a few years now and the event always proves to be a festive hit with locals and tourists alike.

"We love the atmosphere, meeting people, and being surrounded by so many creative stallholders. It is truly a wonderful day out that's not to be missed, and will certainly get people excited about Christmas."

Somerset artist, Matthew Sowter, has confirmed he'll be attending. His sculptures are made from locally sourced materials, including reclaimed wood and salvaged objects. Each original piece has a story behind it.

Matthew, of Matney's Shed, said: "Wells has the most friendly Christmas market. With the beautiful backdrop of the Bishop's Palace, it's a relaxed place to do your festive shopping."

In addition to the 'Christmas in Wells' special on 17 December, the Wells weekly market will be held on Wednesday 21 December as usual and Saturday 24 December (please note the Christmas Eve market shuts at 2pm).

There's free car parking available in all council-owned pay and display car parks for one week, from Saturday 17 December right through until Saturday 24 December 2022. Residents are asked to note that although parking is free, all other terms and conditions of car parking within the relevant car parks remain.
