A much-loved Cedar of Lebanon tree in Wells is set to be removed following an inspection that found it to be unsafe.

The tree, which stands on the corner of the Liberty, was subject to an arboricultural inspection in April as part of routine checks on the Cathedral estate.

The inspection revealed significant decay, posing a risk given the tree's size and location.

Unfortunately, specialists have advised that the tree cannot be safely retained, and the Cathedral has been recommended to apply for a removal order.

Toby Wright, Dean of Wells, said: "The decision to fell and replace such a magnificent tree is an emotive decision for the team at the Cathedral to have to make. However, we have sadly been advised by specialists that the tree cannot be safely retained under the current circumstances."

In a bid to honour the tree's legacy, the Cathedral plans to repurpose its wood and plant a new tree in its place. The community is also invited to share their stories and memories of the tree, which will be collected and shared by the Cathedral.

If you have any memories or stories about the tree, please email them to [email protected].
