Carnival season has kicked in style in Bridgwater. After dire warnings of torrential rain and high winds turned out to be a damp squib the clubs put on a spectacular show, with Meare's Masqueraders creation The Silent Mary (Redemption of the Damned) winning the sought-after Feature Cart Open Class.

Wells club Globe came fifth in this category with Underground - A Steampunk Revolution with Mendip Vale's Rollin' on the River in sixth. Cobra Carnival had an unlucky technical failure that put their lights out but still to part in the parade, to cheers from those attending.

The carts come out again on Monday at Burnham on Sea and arrive in Glastonbury on November 15.
