Wells bus users and motorists are being urged to increase their journeys on buses over the coming months by a Bus It campaign launched by Somerset County Council.

Councillor Mike Rigby, the county's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Planning and Transportation told Wells City Council on Thursday (November 24) that connects the Libra Travel 126 Wells-Axbridge service to Weston-super-Mare is still being worked on and he was optimistic that a solution would be found in the next few months.

Following a question from Councillor Jasmine Browne, he acknowledged how important the full route was for students who have been unable to access the college of their choice. Councillor Rigby also hinted at the possible rollout of improvements to bus stations, including Wells, if the county council can secure further Bus Support Improvement Partnership monies in 2023.

The 126 Supporters group in Wells are planning several events to lobby against the potential loss of First Bus services next year.

Rosa Kell said that encouraging car drivers to use the bus before we lose is crucial to ensure that increased numbers of people using buses is evidence to prove that services must not be cut after March by bus providers like First Bus. She pointed out:

● The benefits of the £2 fare for each single journey starting in January.

● The advantages of using public transport by saving on petrol and car parking.

● The reduction in pollution and benefit to the environment.

126 Supporters will be in Wells' Union Street and bus station car parks on Wednesday 7 and 14 December and Saturday December 17. https://www.facebook.com/126WellsSupportGrp

If you can't be there but want to lend your support the 126 Supporters group suggest you write to Mark Harper, Secretary of State for Transport, asking him to extend the Bus Recovery Grant to major bus routes from Wells to enable local people to get to school, college, work and medical appointments and visitors to enjoy our beautiful countryside without the need for a car.
