Drivers heading west to Taunton via Glastonbury and Street should see a change at Burrowbridge this week as the major A361 traffic signal works move into their next phase.

The full 24-hour closure through the village is scheduled to remain in place until Wednesday, 2 September, before the scheme moves away from the round-the-clock restriction.

From Thursday, 3 September, further evening or overnight restrictions are expected as the project progresses. Somerset Council has been replacing the traffic signals at the bridge over the River Parrett, with the work involving the removal and replacement of old ducting, wiring and signal equipment.

The full closure has been particularly disruptive for people travelling to Taunton, with motorists having to use alternative routes while the A361 has been shut.

Bus passengers are not out of the woods yet either. First Bus says the closure continues to affect its 374 service, with disruption currently listed through Saturday, 19 September.

The 374 normally links Bristol with Taunton via Wells, Glastonbury, Street and Othery. During the Burrowbridge works, services towards Taunton are being diverted, with a number of stops between Othery and the Taunton area unable to be served.

Somerset Council has also been providing a weekday shuttle bus between East Lyng and Taunton during the closure period.

The current phase of work forms part of a wider programme to replace traffic signals across Somerset. At Burrowbridge, the scale of the excavation required meant the council introduced the 24-hour closure from 23 July.

Pedestrian access and crossing arrangements have been maintained during the works, while access for residents and businesses has also been retained.

Anyone using the 374 should also continue checking First Bus updates until the disruption period ends on 19 September.
