February is easing in with a busy mix of music, gardening, singing and the odd quiz night, with plenty going on in and around Wells to fill the gap between weekends and brighten up the darker evenings.

Thursday 29 January

The end of January is not messing about. If you're into Baroque brilliance (or just like your music with a bit of trumpet), Vivaldi's Trumpets is on at St Mary Magdalene Church in Ditcheat. Expect sparkling strings and some serious brass swagger courtesy of the Bristol Ensemble. Starts in the evening, bring ears.

Prefer moving to music rather than sitting still and appreciating it? Helena Eden is back with her Thursday night Dancing for Wellbeing and Joy at Ston Easton Village Hall. Expect a mix of high and low impact routines, all set to tracks from across the decades. Good vibes only, trainers encouraged.

Friday 30 January

Put your smug trivia brain to good use at the Brains of Avalon Quiz at Glastonbury Town Hall. No pub quiz nonsense here—this one's for glory and the John Bromfield Trophy. Bring your own snacks and your sharpest team name.

Or if quizzing feels too thinky, get your vocal cords warmed up for a singalong at Half a Shanty, performing at Sourdown Farm in Butleigh. Fully licensed bar, food vans, ample parking—what more do you need?

Saturday 31 January

Live music more your speed? Alex Hart and Adam Sweet will be doing their soulful singer-songwriter thing at Glastonbury's Avalon Club. One's been compared to Stevie Nicks, the other knows his way round a blues lick. Worth checking out even if you don't usually go acoustic.

Sunday 1 February

Calling all keen gardeners and potato hoarders: Somerset Potato Day is back at Caryford Hall in Castle Cary. Sixty-plus varieties of seed potatoes, heritage seeds, and rhubarb crowns if you're feeling fruity. Free to get in, and the tea's in aid of the hall fund.

Meanwhile, over in Dunster, the Yarn Market Hotel is hosting young soprano Ginevra Dobson for its Aspiring Young Musicians concert series. There's a Baroque-to-modern programme and the option of champagne or apple juice with your ticket. Properly civilised Sunday.

And don't forget, all month long, Snowdrop Month is happening at The Bishop's Palace in Wells. Grab a Snowdrop Walk map and try not to step on any early blooms. It's one for the Instagram grid, or just a nice wander followed by cake.

Monday 2 February

If your Monday needs a reset, Wells has you covered. Helena Eden is back again (she's everywhere this week) with a £7 Sing for Joy! workshop at Wookey Hole Church. Think folk, gospel, African chants and absolutely zero pressure to read sheet music. It's sing-along therapy without the pub background noise.

Earlier that day, Trio Paradis are serving up their 11am Café Concert at St Thomas' Church in Wells. Themed around composers of African heritage, with the usual 'pay what you feel' charm and tea from 10.15am. Get there early if you want the good cake.

And for those who like their Mondays military-tinged, the Royal Air Forces Association Mid-Somerset branch is meeting at Wells Golf Club at 11am. There's a presentation about a Belgian Spitfire pilot and a discussion about spring plans. Yes, there's a bar menu after.
