The Blue School in Wells is gearing up for all pupils to be back in school simultaneously, following structural issues that led to the closure of 20 classrooms.

The much-anticipated move is a relief to the school community, which has faced significant disruption since the discovery of the problems late last year.

Headteacher Mark Woodlock has announced that temporary facilities, dubbed 'Kennion Village', are in the process of being installed. This initiative promises to bring the entire school community back onto the site for the first time since the end of last year, marking a significant step towards normality for staff, students and families.

Funding and contractor readiness have aligned to facilitate the construction of 12 classrooms in two blocks of six, strategically placed behind Holland Hall on the Kennion courts. The primary occupants will be the maths department, which will enable the school to "breathe a little easier come the summer term," according to Woodlock.

This arrangement aims to substantially reduce the extensive circulation of students and staff currently required across the school.

The decision to erect temporary classrooms was necessitated by findings from structural investigations of the Kennion block, a structure dating back to the 1950s. Initial checks for Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) revealed no presence of RAAC but did uncover worrying extensive cracking in the concrete floors and design concerns with the concrete flooring joists.

Mr Woodlock said the temporary classrooms "...feel like permanent structures, with good sound-proofing and ventilation, and therefore positive spaces in which to learn and teach. "Having those classrooms in place will allow us to focus on whatever building measures are required for the old Kennion buildings without the disruption to the students.."

With work expected to be completed by Easter, the school is on track to have everyone back in full-time education on-site by the start of the summer term.
