The Bishop of Bath and Wells has called on people to offer their hearts this Christmas, in a powerful seasonal message reflecting on conflict, uncertainty and the enduring hope of Christ.

Speaking ahead of the festive season, the Rt Revd Michael Beasley quoted In the Bleak Midwinter, urging communities to look beyond "icy" divisions at home and abroad — from the cost of living crisis and immigration debates in the UK, to war in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza and Israel.

"Our own country often feels cross and out of sorts," he said. "Things aren't working as they should be. The challenges are very great — more than any person, government, nation, or even the global community seem able to overcome."

But, he added, the answer is not found in power or politics — but in the birth of Jesus Christ.

"At Christmas time, we remember that the God whom heaven cannot hold came to earth, poor, small, vulnerable — as a baby born in a stable in Bethlehem," he said. "Jesus is God's message of love, sent to meet our deepest longings. He is God's answer to our greatest needs."

He encouraged people to respond not with "big gestures" or "heroic action," but with open hearts.

"Jesus wants nothing more. He asks for nothing less," he said. "Will you give your heart to Jesus?"

Rt Revd Beasley, the 80th Bishop of Bath and Wells, closed his message with warm wishes: "A very happy Christmas to you all."
