Bid to bring King's Head back to life

THE owners of the King's Head in Wells High Street are hoping that the pub can be reopened.

Star Pubs & Bars aim to refurbish the building, which has been empty for years, and find someone to take on the lease. They have recently submitted a planning application for new signs outside the pub as one step towards their goal.

A spokesperson from Star Pubs & Bars said: "The King's Head, Wells, is in need of refurbishment and we want to invest in it to create a great pub for the local community, retaining the traditional features and character of this beautiful building whilst creating new areas for coffee, dining, with an emphasis on locally sourced food, and a beautiful courtyard garden.

"We are currently in the planning process and look forward to sharing more details of the refurbishment in due course.

"We are looking to recruit an experienced operator who can work with us on this vital investment programme to create an outstanding pub. The King's Head is in a great location on the High Street and presents an excellent business opportunity for the right operator who shares our vision."

The application to Mendip District Council is for one fascia sign, one hanging sign, four hoarding signs, two frosted window vinyls and two wall signs (with illumination), to the front and side of the building.

In a statement with the planning documents, the company said: "This scheme has been proposed as the existing signs, due to their age/condition, are in need of replacement. The site has been closed up for some time and the new external decorations and signage will go alongside the proposed internal refurbishment.

"On the whole, we have gone for a like for like scheme as the building is listed.

"As this site is closed, the owners are keen to reopen the pub to ensure its long-term future and to prevent any drastic deterioration of the pub over the winter period.

"The pub occupies a prominent site on the main high street in Wells, and it is in much need of a refresh. Our proposal shows a contrasting colour for the building to enhance its visibility, but we have been careful to work with colours from the Dulux heritage range, to ensure that we are treating the listed building with respect."

A new Lounge cafe/bar is due to open on the other side of High Street before too long, and work has begun to reopen The Mermaid Inn in Tucker Street as a pub with bed and breakfast rooms. The Sherston has just reopened after a refurbishment, and The White Hart was converted from a hotel to a pub with rooms in December.

Anyone who is interested in leasing the King's Head is invited to call the Star Pubs & Bars recruitment line on 08085 949596 or visit www.starpubs.co.uk.
