Lee Begg and Charlie Crook were the stars as Wells City took a hard-earned 2-1 victory away to Radstock Town yesterday (August 24).
The first 20 minutes saw no efforts on goal as both teams cancelled each other out.
In the 21st minute, Ryan Stiles did well to hit the target with a volley from a tight angle that was saved at the near post.
A long ball from the Radstock centre half evaded the Wells defence on 23 minutes, and the Radstock striker went one on one against Kieran Hodges who denied him with a brilliant save.
The breakthrough for Wells came after 28 minutes had been played when Harry Foster did well to latch on to a Hodges goalkick before laying it off to Mark Randall who put an inch perfect cross to the back post for Charlie Crook to powerfully head home.
After 36 minutes, good link up play between Foster and Stiles saw Stiles fire just wide from 25 yards.
The second Wells goal came on 39 minutes when a clever interchange between Ross Padfield and Randall allowed Randall space down the left flank and yet another pinpoint cross found Crook who still had a lot to do but somehow swivelled and volleyed the ball into the bottom corner from 15 yards out.
Radstock got a goal back on 41 minutes when a corner wasn't defended properly and the ball was finally played back across the face of the goal for a tap in at the far post.
Into the second half and on 53 minutes Foster ws put through by Alex Camm but he blazed over from the edge of the box.
On 59 minutes a dangerous ball into the Wells box was somehow clawed away by Hodges but in doing this the ball struck the Radstock forward with the ball then hitting the post before it found its way to a Radstock midfielder 12 yards out and his shot on target is cleared off the line by Padfield.
After 68 minutes a fierce shot from a Radstock striker was brilliantly blocked by Ben Amghar.
Another pin point long ball from Hodges on 78 minutes picked out Camm who went one on one with the Radstock keeper who did really well to deny him.
In the final minutes, Foster drove at the Radstock defence and went for goal when he could have slipped it to his left hand side and play Camm in, meaning an easy save for the keeper.
Overall this was a very tight game played in great spirit. The first half Wells had the better of it but credit where credit's due, Radstock pushed Wells hard in the second half and never gave up.
Wells defended extremely well in the last 20 minutes to limit Radstock's attempts on goal. There will not be many teams coming away with three points from Radstock's ground so this was a great result for Wells.
