Glastonbury busker’s dream of singing at Wells Cathedral comes true

Local Features by Brad Gerrard 5th Nov 2026

A Glastonbury busking session led to an unlikely friendship — and a promise that soprano Charlotte Akenhead is about to see fulfilled.

Several years ago, Charlotte was singing in the town when she caught the attention of Rollo Maughfling, Britain's Archdruid. He travelled to Wells the following day to hear her perform again.

Over lunch at The Crown, with Wells Cathedral visible above the city, he asked Charlotte about her greatest ambition. She pointed towards the Cathedral and told him she wanted to sing there.

His response was simple: "Done."

Rollo later invited Charlotte to perform at a Stonehenge Equinox gathering. Since then, her career has included singing with the London Philharmonic Choir, appearances at the BBC Proms and sharing a stage with Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Now she will perform at Wells Cathedral for the first time on Friday, 27 November, in Callas Candlelight Christmas.

The concert is due to run from 7pm to 9pm, with doors opening at 6.15pm. The programme includes opera arias by Puccini and Bellini, music by film composer Hans Zimmer and festive choral pieces, performed with live musicians in the Cathedral's candlelit nave.

For Charlotte, the concert brings her back to the ambition she shared over lunch in Wells — and to the chance encounter that began on the streets of Glastonbury.
