Hundreds of metal stemmed poppies will be planted in the portcullis knot garden at The Bishop's Palace in time for Remembrance weekend.

There were originally 7986 poppies in 2018 – one to mark each life lost of servicemen from the county of Somerset during World War One – but some were sold in 2018 to raise money for SSAFA and The Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion.

The poppies are to be put in place by Dan Vidler, who conceived the idea for the 2018 centenary, with help from staff and volunteers from the Palace.

After the original Somerset poppies project finished in 2018 it was agreed that the Palace should retain 2000 poppies in order to continue to display them inside the grounds, as they had been taken to the hearts of the local people of Somerset. Each year they have moved to a different location in the gardens.

Originally made by local school children, they will be on display in the garden until 17th November to mark the occasion of Remembrance. The beautiful picture above was taken in 2020.
