Former cottages, now fully grown-up

A five-bed in Butleigh Wootton with views, history, and a kitchen that might make you care about splashbacks.

Proof that period charm and modern taste can, occasionally, get along.

If you've ever thought two cottages were better than one, you're in luck. Originally built in 1867 as a pair of workers' homes for the local reverend's estate, this Blue Lias beauty has since evolved into a fully-fledged five-bed with style, substance, and the sort of views that make your phone camera suddenly important.

It's on the market with Sandersons in Wells for £900,000 — and worth a click if countryside calm and architectural character are on your wishlist.

The layout doesn't try too hard — which is exactly the point. There's a triple-aspect sitting room with a wood-burner (because of course), and a Neptune kitchen/diner that comes with a four-oven Aga and more thoughtful tiling than some entire houses.

The ground floor also houses a spare bedroom and shower room, perfect for guests, grannies or escapees from the school run.

Upstairs, three proper doubles and a loft-style eaves room handle the sleeping arrangements. The principal bedroom is ripe for an en-suite, if you're feeling ambitious. Throughout, you'll find beams, stonework and original features that remind you this house was around long before the concept of open-plan "zones."

The garden's half an acre of actual usefulness, not just Instagram foliage — lawn, kitchen garden, terrace, the works. There's parking for five, which may even stop a domestic. And while the postcode says Glastonbury, this is very much Butleigh Wootton: more farm shop and footpaths than festivals.

Full listing here, complete with photos of that kitchen and those views. And if it disappears fast, Sandersons' early bird alerts are worth your email address.
